The name of Evelyn Underhill is inextricably associated with mysticism. It was the title of her first book, and the words ‘mysticism’ or ‘mystic’ appear in the titles of several later works. As the extracts in this book will show, her thinking was by no means limited to the kind of detached and somewhat esoteric contemplation that mysticism immediately suggests. Yet it is true to say that the spirit of mysticism informed all that she wrote, and supported the extensive
